While attending college, James A. Schilens was interested in civil engineering and architecture, particularly the environmental side of planning and design. From the moment he discovered a copy of Landscape Architecture magazine, he knew he had found the perfect career choice. James received his degree in Landscape Architecture from The Ohio State University in 1984, and went into business for himself with the founding of Schilens & Associates in 1988. Schilens & Associates provides a very diverse selection of land planning and landscape architecture services. We design anything pertaining to the outdoor environment, including grading and drainage, hardscapes, roads and pavement, and landscaping and irrigation systems. We design plans that owners can use themselves or that can be put out to bid to various contractors. With customized plans tailored to our clients personal needs and preferences, each contractor is then bidding on the same specifications typically resulting in cost savings for our clients.

We work primarily with large scale or complicated issues meshing multiple elements into distinctive design. We have designed projects for a number of residences having erosion control issues, and have completed several award winning projects on Lake Erie properties. Often we are called upon to advise homeowners or contractors on design and installation of swimming pools, spas, gazebos, and other hardscape elements and help them incorporate these items cohesively into a complete landscape design.

We meet with clients to learn their wants and needs, and then offer advice on the best way to achieve their goals in accordance with professional design precepts, including local zoning and other governmental regulations. We like to visit the site to totally immerse ourselves in the environment before doing the design work. Once we thoroughly understand all aspects of the project and the location, we work closely with our clients to creatively meet their objectives while working within their budget.
